TONY HETHERINGTON's Q & A

Halifax Pressure

I was most interested to read in your article about the failure of the Halifax to issue shares to members living in certain foreign countries. I have a home in the UK, bought with a Halifax mortgage. My wife and I live there when we are in the UK, but because I gave a mailing address in Oman the Halifax refused to issue me with any shares. I would be interested in co-operating with others in a similar position, with a view to taking the whole matter to court for a ruling.
N.A.B., Oman

An estimated 300,000 plus Halifax members received nothing when the society became a publicly quoted bank. A pressure group has been set up by Brian Hazlehurst, an expat living in Brazil, who is one of those affected.

The group is called UNHAV - UNited HAlifax Victims - and you can follow developments on their Internet website   http://www.rain.org/~jmhmps/unhav.html.   You can e-mail Brian at   brianhaz@uninet.com.br,   or fax him on +55 21 556 1846.
